General Notes:
Emily Eliza Wallis was born in 1875 in Brunswick Victoria. She was the eldest child in a family of 14 children, 9 of whom survived childhood. By 1878 the family moved to Hawthorn and her father William Thomas Wallis became the Major of Hawthorn in 1884-85. By 1889 the family had moved to Geelong and it was here that Emily met Frank Hiscock as both families were living in the area at that time. When she married Frank in 1900 they lived on a farm at Warraquil (later known as Baker). Three children were born here. The family moved to Loch about 1912. The land was richer and had a much heavier rainfall than the often drought prone Baker area. Emily also had relations farming in the area. They rented a property and grew onions and potatoes. There were quite a few people growing onions there at the time. Frank's brother Victor helped for a while. The flats at the bottom of the rented property were eventually taken over and used as a football ground. Another son, Victor, was added to the family in 1918. Frank and Emily bought a farm at Ruby and the family turned to dairying. Emily loved gardening and took a great pride in her display of flowers. When eldest son Arthur married in 1940, Emily arranged an afternoon tea. She was busy organising this when she slipped over and hurt her leg. She wasn't able to go to the ceremony at Leongatha, but sat with her leg on a chair during the reception. Later she was taken to hospital where it was found she had broken her leg. Eldest daughter, Emily, stayed home to look after her parents as their health failed. She married William Sampson in 1935 and he moved in and took over milking the cows. When Emily and Frank passed away the farm was sold and Emily and Bill moved into Leongatha.
