DEATH OF AN OLD COLONIST. \endash Mr. George Hesseltine Lovett, one of the oldest colonists in these parts, died at Albury on Wednesday of last week. Mr. Lovett was over 80 years of age. He was a native of Hull, and arrived in Melbourne soon after the discovery of the Victorian goldfields. One of his first ventures was the decoration of a large wooden theatre in Melbourne. Just as the work was nearing completion a heavy storm broke over the city, and the building was levelled to the ground, involving the contractor in financial ruin. Mr. Lovett subsequently went to Ballarat, and obtained a billet as stage manager at the old "Charlie Napier" Theatre. Later on he went to the Albury district as a teacher of dancing, and it is said that he taught two generations of Riverina pioneers to dance. He subsequently took up a selection near Albury under the Robertson Land Act, but the venture was not a success. Mr. Lovett was widely known, and he leaves numerous relatives.
