Frederick Michael Stokes was one of the three founders of the Sydney Morning Herald. At the time of the sale of the paper to the Fairfax's he was the sole owner.

Frederick married Mary Ann Heath Gray in 1832 in Sydney, NSW Australia.¹⁵²¹ (Mary Ann Heath Gray was born on 25 Sep 1809 in Norfolk Island, NSW Australia, died on 16 Mar 1902 in Marrickville, Sydney, NSW Australia and was buried on 18 Mar 1902 in Rookwood Cemetery, Lidcombe, Sydney, NSW Australia ¹⁵²¹.)
