Research Notes:
Anne Lockwood notes: Known as Frederick rather than Edward. For some obscure reason he changed his surname to Lockwood. The Sand's Sydney & NSW Directory list Frederick Cadogan in 1890 as " Newsagent" of Birkenhead Road, Birkenhead, and in 1893 he was living at Cary St. Leichhardt. He was a member of the Oddfellow Brotherhood. He was a journalist in Lechhardt and managed "The Observer". He married Elizabeth Sarah Leslie Lockwood who died in 1902 and is buried at the Historic Cemetery near North Shore Hospital. He was left with 4 children. One of whom was my husband's grandfather - Joseph Lockwood. He married May Bell in 1911 and had another 3 children. Ron was later the Mayor of Bankstown. There is a photo of Howard Lockwood on the Archives site. He was a postman in Hornsby. They died on the same day in 1936 and are both buried at Northern Suburbs as "Cadogan Lockwood"
The obscure reason was something to do with an argument with his brother who co-owned the newsagent in Balmain. Something to do with a license of some sort. They had a fight over it and he walked out and changed his name. He moved to Picton and was the editor of the local newspaper. I cannot confirm this, although this is the family story. I have yet to go and try their archives. This is when he married May Bell, who already had 1 child, and then increased his family.
Joseph Lockwood married Bridget Nora Schramm and they lived in Hornsby. They has 2 sons and 3 daughters. One of their sons was Joseph Michael Lockwood who is my husband, Graeme's, father. He died in 1950 and is buried at North Suburbs Crematorium wall. Bridget Nora (known at Dolly) remarried but had not more children.
I have been in touch with Peter Cadogan who did that incredible site on the Cadogans and am going to bring some of his information up to date.
