Harold Carr
Research Notes: The attack at Fromelles in France was a diversionary action to the Battles of the Somme in 1916. 1,917 Australians were killed or died of wounds in the 24 hour period, the greatest single loss of life in the whole war, and the greatest single loss of life in any civilian or military disaster in Australian history. The casualities exceeded those of the Boer war the Korean War and the Vietnam War combined. (Among the dead was a great-uncle of Noel Davies, Private Harold Carr, aged about 20, of the 14th Australian Machine Gun Company). |
