Mary Ann Nicholl
- Born: Cir 1860
- Marriage (1): David Proctor
General Notes:
Jean Cameron notes: My mother-i-l's birth certificate shows Alexina Anderson Nicoll, born October 11, 1896, 2 a m, at Waternaugh, Parish of Mains, Forfar , mother Mary Ann Nicoll, yarn bleacher, no father shown. I wonder why Mary Ann was in Forfar, if, presumably, she worked in the Dundee jute mills ? Was her family there ? It must have been a foul job.
I think that when we went to Edinburgh to look for the records of Don's mother, that it said Illegitimate as well. But they don't put that on the copies. We were trying to get UK citizenship for our sons by showing that the ancestry was Scottish. And did.
So Mary Nicoll must have married after Alexina was born, or perhaps between marriages ?
Whether Alexina had any contact with her mother in Australia, because after Don's parents retired they left Borneo, Sarawak, and went to live in Rose Bay, Sydney. But I don't remember when that was exactly, if it was before Mary Nicoll died in 1958. Ewan was born in 1962 and they were there then, because I still have the koala bear, made from kangaroo fur, which Alexina sent. But Don threw out any letters his parents wrote, they weren't a close family at all. Don's father had a host of brothers and sisters, but there was never any contact.
