source: Keith Shrimpton where it is noted that he arrived on the "Guildford" Port Jackson on 30th September 1820 Henry arrived as a convict on the "Guildford" on the 14/5/1820./or 30/9/1820. "The Pragmatic Pioneers" "Page 181" Henry Smith, late of the Parish of Walthamstow, appeared at the Essex Assizes on 18th March 1820 charged with stealing five quarters of seed wheat to the value of twenty Pounds, the property of Charles Briant. He and his five accomplices were found guilty and all were sentenced to seven years Transportation. Henry sailed for Port Jackson on the "Guildford" on 14th May 1820, and arrived in the Colony on 30th September. He was described in the indents as being twenty-two years of age, five foot nine inches tall, dark sallow complexion, black hair and dark eyes. His occupation in the indents was given as a dyer however he appears in Colonial records as a brick maker. In the 1825 muster he appeared as a convict servant at Bathurst, and in the 1828 Census he may be the H. Smith listed as working in the Wellington Valley, but by 1834 he was working for the Suttors on their property Brucedale at Bathurst. George Suttor arrived in the Colony in 1800 as a free settler, and was granted land at Baulkham Hills. The Baulkham Hill property gave him little joy, but he found the prosperity that he sought when he took up Brucedale in the early 1820s and then Alloway Bank in 1851. These properties and their owners were to be closely associated with this Smith family for two generations. Henry married Ellen Malone at Bathurst on 23rd April 1834, the ceremony was performed by the Reverend John Espy Keane and the witnesses were Clara Smith and Henry H. Fleming. Henry and Ellen both signed their name with their Mark.
