General Notes:
Born in Jamaica. Came to Australia with father in 1856. Was using the surname 'Eslake' at least as early as 1875 (on birth certificate of illegitimate son George). (He may well have fallen out with his stern father over this or other events).
Moved to the Tweed River district (far north of NSW) sometime in the 1880s and became a dairy farmer. Took up 90 acres of land in Byangum, in the Parish of Wollumbin, on 30 December 1886, and sold it to WR Isaacs, a Murwillaumbah grazier (for £270) in June 1899.
Some time between 1896 and 1899 (or possibly earlier) he became associated with Ada Louise Share (wife of Alfred Creighton Share), with whom he subsequently had six children though they never married). Left the Tweed River district in 1902 after a very severe drought and returned to Sydney. He lived at 15 Cromwell Street, Leichhardt (listed at that address in the 1906 Sands Directory) and in June 1905 bought a block of land at Concord (with a mortgage of £250). The bank foreclosed on this mortgage in 1912.
(Note there is a William Slatyer listed on p. 897 of the 1897 Sands Directory at 12 Holt Street; on p. 929 of the Sands Directory for 1898 at 41 Little Belmore Street; and on p. 1244 of the 1908 Directory at Reservoir Lane. However William R Eslake also listed at Bungay St continuously from 1909 until 1922)
A statutory declaration at the office of solicitor Percy L Williamson and Co. dated 30 June 1950 by Margaret Vernon, a daughter of Eusebia (née Slatyer) and James Vernon, listed the children of Revd William Slatyer and the dates of death of each. This declaration mentions 'William Roy Eslake, who assumed the name of William Roy Eslake, died June 1917 without having married, as appears by the certified copy of the particulars of his death ... the person described as William Roy Eslake in annex L [ie the death certificate] is the son of my late grandfather William Slatyer".
