Joseph inherited Stone Cross Farm, Laughton from his grandfather who died 181 5 . Joseph was in situ by 1804 when he was paying a poor rate of –15.12.0 twic e ye arly. He later became a maltster in Southover, Sussex.

Joseph married Ann Marchant, daughter of Thomas Marchant and Ann Fuller, on 13 May 1805 in South Malling, Sussex England. (Ann Marchant was born in Jul 1786 in South Malling, Sussex England, died on 18 Sep 1864 and was buried on 23 Sep 1864 in All Saints, Lewes, East Sussex England.)
