John James WALTER and Ellen HISCOCK. In 1852 John James WALTER arrived in Melbourne from Poole, Bedfordshire, England aged 21. Before leaving England John had worked as a farm hand. Life was very hard and he told tales of eating his breakfast as he walked to work. His breakfast was often a raw turnip almost too cold to hold. This was when his thoughts turned to the Colonies. Among the passengers on the ship was the family of William Hiscock whom he was to become united with in time. In Melbourne he got a job in a grain store and later he was a teamster travelling between Melbourne and Bendigo. Meanwhile William Hiscock had selected land in Pyalong so John did likewise and selected 467 acres along the Pyalong Broadford Road, 3 miles from Pyalong. In 1860 he married Helen Hiscock, daughter of William. John and Helen had a daughter Edith in 1865, Frederick in 1872 and John Henry in 1873. The family had moved to Pyalong-Lancefield Road where John was operating a thresher, then to Main Street, Pyalong as a temporary move before moving to his selection. A timber house was built with extensions over the years. The children all attended the Glenaroua school.
The Kilmore Free Press. Thursday, June 10, 1920. In the death of Mr Jno. J. Walter, of Glenaroua, which occurred on Tuesday last, that district loses one of its most highly esteemed inhabitants. Mr. Walter had attained the fine old age of 89 years, and had been engaged mostly in grazing pursuits at Glenaroua for about half a century. Notwithstanding his advanced years he was active up to within a brief period of his demise. Many old friends and neighbours sympathise deeply with the bereaved family. Deceased was a colonist since 1852, and nearly all the period since then was a resident of the district named. The remains were interred in Pyalong Cemetery yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon, Mr Jas. Beegan having charge of the funeral arrangements.
