Rosemary Sharples comments: The Sharples were coal miners, originally from Lancashire. They moved to County Durham after the cotton famine of the 1860s caused the Lancashire cotton mills and hence the coal mines that supplied them, to cease production. I don't know why the Sharples left County Durham, but I have found an official edict from the NSW government in 1879, stating that no more miners were to be assisted - which is why, presumably, William Sharples (and maybe the Emerys) described himself as a labourer rather than a miner. There were some miners on the La Hogue, heading for the mines at Joadja Creek, who weren't afraid to call themselves miners.
