  General Notes:

Virginia Crocker notes:
I saw your webpage with information on Ellen Riach and George Nicol.

I have been researching my husband's family (Morice) who came from Appin NSW and find a connection - William Morice purchased "Netherdale" from the Estate of John Nicol. sometime between 1911 and a while before 1923. I have William's probate file and he still owed the Nicol estate about 280 pounds when he died in 1923.

The photo of Netherdale on your website does look rather like I remember but with a more substantial garden in front. I started going there in about 1962 when Ruth Morice (my husband's great aunt) still lived there. Ruth's nephew, Ken NIcholls, ran the dairy when he returned from WWII and the land was split up leaving the little house on about 5 acres. Ken Nicholl's sister (my mother-in-law) inherited the house and paddock when Ruth died in 1968 and eventually sold it in 1986.
It was William Morice's father-in-law, John Simpson, who originally had the property at Macquarie Dale (he came out from Ireland in 1840). William Morice married his daughter Anne at Macquarie Dale in 1882. William was a builder and stonemason from Scotland. Although William emigrated in 1880, I don't think he took up dairy farming until well into the 1900s as he was in South Africa in 1903 building a bridge in Natal province..
The 1891and 1901 census show John Nicol, Walter Nicol and John Simpson on adjoining allotments at Macquarie Dale. Obviously when William Morice took over his father-in-law's property he also bought land from the estate of your great grandfather some time after 1911 and still had a mortgage when he died in 1923.

Noted events in his life were:

• Occupation: Farmer.

• connection.

• connection.

• Resided.

John married Elizabeth Margaret Sutherland, daughter of John Sutherland and Margaret Elliott, on 7 Mar 1887 in St Philips C of E, Auburn, Sydney, NSW Australia. (Elizabeth Margaret Sutherland was born on 7 Apr 1863 in East Bargo (Wilton), NSW Australia, died on 23 Jul 1924 in Camden, NSW Australia and was buried in Congregational Cemetery, Campbelltown, Sydney, NSW Australia (now adjacent to the catholic school).)
