source: John Seagrove who notes: William founded the well-known Portsmouth naval officers outfitting business of Seagrove & Co. in about 1812. As well as as uniforms for most commissioned ranks, the firm supplied naval officers swords - dirks for midshipmen, and duty and dress swords for the higher ranks. The company remained in the family for about 75 years, eventually being acquired by the Gieves business in 1904.
Following William snr's death in 1849, Edwin Augustus joined his older brother William James S in owning the company. Edwin and William jnr parted company in c1867, after which Edwin continued as proprietor until his death in 1880.rom 1830 onwards the Seagrove business was located at No. 22 The Common Hard, Portsea. This street fronts onto Portsmouth harbour and is adjacent to the main gate of HM Dockyard, Portsmouth. The Gieves naval outfitters remained at No 22 until closing its doors in about 1968. Gieves & Hawkes' main shop and offices are now at No 1 Savile Row, London.
