After the death of my greatgrandfather, Aunt Annie took over the running of the Commercial Hotel. I have the feeling that she was a pretty smart businesswoman. Her husband was the Postmaster at a place near ooma -can't remember the name. The marriage did not last, that I do know.
Apparently, she was the first person to install a shower system in the hotel. We have been back to Barraba on a number of occasions. I was able to
see inside the old house where my father grew up - my grandfather had fruit trees, mostly apple, and he was taught to graft by his father-in-law,
Richard Rumsby. I think some of the trees are still there. My mother's parents also lived in Barraba and I remember staying in their house, or
visiting. I was about 7 or 8 then. She was a no-nonsense woman - she used to cook for the hotel and made wonderful Christmas cakes, so I believe.
I found where the house stood - sadly, it is no longer there, just an expanse of green with trees. It burned down. I must confess to feeling
very sad, standing there.

Mary married John Francis Banfield, son of Hewitt Banfield and Ellen Glasheen, on 20 Feb 1883 in Tamworth, NSW Australia. (John Francis Banfield was born on 3 Apr 1860 in Morpeth, NSW Australia and died in 1892 in Hamilton, Newcastle, NSW Australia.)
