Philip Devey was actually Joseph Devey's stepson. Ellen was previously married to a man whose last name was Crumpton (haven't been able to track down his first name), and they had one son, Philip. Mr. Crumpton was killed in an accident involving a horse or carriage, and Ellen later married Joseph Devey who adopted Philip.
